From the series It may not be made of stone, it is my forever home
In ‘It may not be made of stone, it is my forever home’ Sophie de Vos researches our bodies as being our only real home. The starting point for this series was an image made by the Polish physician Tobias Ben Moses Cohnin, who drew a parallel between the human body and a house, in a Hebrew encyclopaedia in 1708. It is a visual metaphor, in which the organs are described as different rooms in a house, each with its own function. In this series, Sophie combines the human body with materials commonly used in construction. By casting parts of the body in a mould of plaster, the comparison with walls is drawn. What is really our home? Those walls, at that one address? Or our body, our skin, our head with all our thoughts? And if we saw our body as our home, how would we treat it? The series explores the past, present and the potential of the self through intimate, strong and reflective images.
