A space for contemporary art and collaboration

This is Root Gallery

Root Gallery is a contemporary art gallery rooted in long-term collaboration, artistic depth, and personal connection.
Founded in 2018 by Yvonne de Jong, Root Gallery represents a new generation of artists who work with precision, care, and vision, each with a distinctive voice and a strong visual signature.

The gallery is located in a former dike building from the early 1900s in Krimpen aan de Lek, where history and contemporary art meet. Root offers more than exhibitions: it is a space where artistic practices are developed, works are presented with care, and relationships grow over time.

We represent artists whose work balances material exploration and conceptual clarity. Their practices are grounded, curious, and often evolve over many years. At Root, we believe in that kind of growth: slow, intentional, and built on trust.

Many of the artists we work with have been part of the gallery for years. Together, we grow.

Our roster includes both emerging and mid-career artists:
Noah Arends, Donald Schenkel, Vera Klaus, Sophie de Vos, Quinda Verheul, Saïd Kinos, Jan Theun van Rees, Lisette Schumacher, Freerk Wilbers, and Karen van de Vliet.
Their works can be experienced in our gallery, at major art fairs, and through our online channels.

Root Gallery is built on trust, focus, and a deep respect for the artistic process.

Events & Community

At Root Gallery, we believe that art is best experienced in dialogue, with the work, with the artist and with each other.
We host intimate gatherings that bring together artists, collectors, and curious visitors. From studio visits and exhibition openings where artists and guests meet, to small-scale talks and one-on-one viewings, our events are designed to foster real connection. We focus on moments where there's room to take your time and be in conversation.

Commitment to Fair Practice

Root Gallery adheres to the Fair Practice Code of the Dutch Gallery Association, emphasizing transparency, integrity, and collaboration. We maintain direct relationships with our artists and collectors, ensuring that any decisions impacting an artist’s career are made in close consultation with them. Through ongoing dialogue with artists, partners, and clients, we build strong, long-lasting relationships that benefit the contemporary art ecosystem.

2018 – The Beginning

Root Gallery opened its doors with its first exhibition, Time Is All I've Got, a solo presentation by Sophie de Vos. The gallery was originally located in a former retail space in Rotterdam Noord, an area known for its creative energy.

2021 – A New Challenge in Rotterdam West

In 2021, Root Gallery moved to a new location in the former cinema hall of the old city archive in Rotterdam West. The scale of the venue allowed for the presentation of monumental artworks and immersive exhibitions, pushing the boundaries of what was possible in a gallery space. The first exhibition at this location, Moving, a solo show by Freerk Wilbers, set the tone for a period of ambitious projects and large-scale installations.

2024 – A New Home

Most recently, Root Gallery relocated to a historic early 1900s dike building, which is currently being renovated into a sustainable contemporary art space. While retaining the character of the original structure, the new gallery merges historical charm with modern design, providing a dynamic setting for artists and collectors alike.

Our artists

Root Gallery works with a small group of contemporary artists whose practices are thoughtful, consistent, and always evolving. Many have been part of the gallery for years. Their work reflects a deep engagement with materials, form and meaning. The work is developed with dedication, and driven by curiosity and ambition.

We represent artists who take their practice seriously. Who are willing to take risks, push their work forward, and keep asking questions, visually and conceptually. Our collaboration goes beyond exhibitions: we support research, new directions, and the development of ambitious projects across locations and contexts.

Discover their work on our Artists Page.

Mission

Root Gallery supports artists in building lasting, meaningful practices. And connects their work with people who value depth and direction.
We work closely with a small number of contemporary artists whose practices are shaped by material awareness, visual precision, and a clear sense of intent. Our role is to provide focus and continuity, not only around exhibitions, but throughout the evolution of their work.
Root Gallery creates space for relationships to grow, both in the studio and beyond, with art as the connecting force.

Vision

We believe that everything worth building takes time.
Art, dialogue, collaboration: none of it should be rushed. Our vision is to create a gallery that offers direction and continuity, not distraction. A place where artists are free to develop ambitious work on their own terms, and where visitors feel welcome to ask, look, and take their time.

We want Root Gallery to be a steady presence, independent, focused, and human in scale. A place where professional ambition and personal attention go hand in hand. And where growth doesn’t follow trends, but emerges from trust, clarity, and shared commitment.
