Oil paint on canvas
Over the past 11 years, Donald Schenkel has dedicated himself to creating subtle oil paintings that explore color transitions. Recently, he has begun to disrupt these transitions with new interventions, introducing elements reminiscent of visual "glitches." For Schenkel, the essence of his work lies in crafting images that invite viewers to lose themselves, entering a contemplative state through mere observation. In recent years, he has been intrigued by the notion that our perception of paintings may evolve as we become increasingly accustomed to digital media. He envisions a future where a painting might be perceived similarly to a screen, reflecting our digital familiarity. This contemplation has led him to consider how oil paintings can serve not only as windows into alternate realities but also as screens that project an experience toward the viewer, drawing them in.
