More about the artist

In essence, Sophie de Vos' practice revolves around the concept of human nature and the questions surrounding it. Contemplating about what it means to be human - covering subjects such as transience, decay, and the passing of time - allows her to dig deep, to reflect on her own perceptions regarding these topics, as well as collective experiences. For humans, these subjects are often emotionally charged, while in nature they are most common. Sophie’s work emphasises this in a very subtle way, combining living and non-living elements to capture the essence of the subject at hand. The pitch black backdrop where these elements seem to appear from - or disappear into - relates to the hidden, the secretive and the unknown, creating an air of mystery as a result.

Delicately and vulnerably, Sophie this way manages to pose questions without looking for particular answers. Her works tell stories through image and language, sharing a poetic significance by means of her attributed titles. They share narratives that were inspired by her strong interest in the human psyche and the human body as well as personal memories, emotions and encounters.
