Announcement Art Rotterdam 2024
Root Gallery is happy to be part of the next Art Rotterdam edition from February 1st to February 4, 2024!
Art Art Rotterdam, the works of Jan Kuhlemeier, Lisette Schumacher, Saïd Kinos and Quinda Verheul will come together in a unique presentation. The colourful works of Jan and Saïd, combined with the bright and tranquil works of Lisette and the minimal, sculptural works of Quinda Verheul complement each other well. The different mediums and interacting nature of the works allow for an interesting visitor’s experience. Each artist has their own unique signature. Yet, they share in-depth research into material and its qualities, composition and concept of which in this case many are inspired by travelling to different parts of the world.
Jan Kuhlemeier shows a new series that was inspired by his latest trip to Indonesia. For this series, Jan returns to his memories of mezmerising sunsets in Indonesia that showed a variety of colours and transparencies in the waters. The works arised from his use of translucent layers of colour in which Jan searches for specific hues and colour nuances.
Lisette Schumacher will present a collection of new works. After immersing herself in the Stahl House's history and design during a research period in 2022 in Los Angeles, she produced her first series of works that respond to the site's context, history, and design. Her second research period aims to deepen her research into the Stahl House and its family history. Upon her return she will produce a collection of painted images that cast iridescent colours, capturing the light and shadow plays on the house’s glass surface, engendering a dynamic connection between the architecture and its environment.
Saïd Kinos will show ‘Breath’ a new bronze sculpture in which the fragmented typography typical to his practice is applied in three dimensional form. Saïd too will be presenting a small series of paper works and paintings from a continuing research in which he explores a loose intuitive approach to his design and painting technique. To emphasise the scalability of the paper works, a mural will be created as a backdrop on one of the walls.
Quinda Verheul will be showing the results of a new research into landscapes and human interaction. Being an athlete partaking in several ultra mountain bike competitions each year, Quinda’s travels are inextricably reflected in her practice. Currently, Quinda is working on ‘Kegeti’ a new series that she has named after her favourite mountain pass in her recent trip to Kyrgyzstan. It is inspired by the black rocks that lingered in the blue thin air at the top of the mountain and her experience in the mountains; truly becoming one with her environment.
