Word - Saïd Kinos
Experimenting with different aesthetics and approaches has led to the development of a signature style and method with which Saïd is fully able to connect and identify. This has cleared the way to new enriching pathways, such as working with sculpture. In this exhibition an iconic, wooden, four meter high sculpture has entered the gallery space, allowing Saïd’s work to be experienced in three dimensional form. Recognizable and familiar, yet surprising and out of the ordinary, this exhibition represents ‘the end of the beginning’. Visitors are invited to move around, explore and experience the perception of fragmented words, colors, form and light.
Saïd is fascinated by the ways in which people communicate. Listening to hip-hop music from an early age introduced him to the creative possibilities of language; wordplay, rhymes and ambiguous tricks, conveying personal meaning through the powerful words of others. In the first instance, language is considered the opposite of abstraction. After all, the primary function of language is to convey a specific meaning. Even so, different people can have different meanings for a word or an aspect within a language. Due to personal associations or people's state of mind these subjective meanings bring language closer to abstraction. Saïd explores this element of abstraction through high-contrast, vibrant color combinations and fragmented typography. This way, words have become the vehicle to discover different shapes, materials and colors.
